The 36th Exhibition of ‘the churchie emerging art prize’ has closed and the People’s Choice Prize has been won by Dylan Bolger. The $3,000 prize sponsored by Madison Cleaning Services is awarded to the artist who receives the most votes from the public throughout the exhibition. One lucky voter has won a two-night stay at Spicers Hidden Vale, courtesy of Spicers Retreats.
Bolger is a Maiawali, Karuwali, Pitta-Pitta, and Gomeroi artist who uses the macaranga leaf motif to explore resilience and Blakness. This ancient plant is considered a pioneer plant, meaning that it will be one of the first to grow back after devastation such as wildfire or flood.
‘I use the macaranga leaf to represent my people and culture as being of an “old-world genesis” as we grow back through the devastation of colonisation’.
